Microsoft Certification for SQL Server

I am already an MCDBA (SQL Server 2000), and while I am currently working more in Oracle / UNIX / SAP sphere, I am keen to take the Microsoft Certification for SQL Server 2008. This will help Nadjib with his eBabel business, for starters this will help me get back into Microsoft technologies and infrastructure. Also I hope to be able to help Nadjib and encourage him to take certification.

I have just attended a Microsoft Live Meeting, regarding the latest certification programs

Three Tier Model: Technical Specialist (MCTS) -> IT Professional -> Master

(Can start at the IT Professional level, but complete MCTS as well)

MCTS: "install, manage and config level" - one exam per admin, development, business intelligence

  1. 70-432 Implementation & Maintenance
  2. 70-433 Database Development
  3. 70-448 Business Intelligent

MCITP: Buils on MCTS, 2-6 exams total path

  1. 70-450 Pro Implementation & Maintenance
  2. 70-451 Pro Database Development
  3. 70-452 Pro Business Intelligent

($125US/exam, 40-60 questions, 120 minutes)

For preparation they recommended: hands on experience, prep guides, study groups, training, blogs, user groups

All these exams/certifications become invalid/retired when the products (i.e. SQL server 2008) go out of support

One question, an old chestnut which was raised early on was whether it was worth an experience DBA taking the exam? The unsurprising answer for the Microsoft training gurus, was yes... it shows that that you have kept up to date. Other reasons include that recruitment consultant will tend to select certified candidates and it shows that you are interest / care.

Apparently there are going to be pre-requisites for the exam e.g. at least a years of experience.

There was quite alot about training kits and hands-on training which Microsoft offer.

They completed the presentations with discussion of the Microsoft Certified Master and Architect programs: "top tear training for a community of trusted experts" ... "not necessarily for everyone". Master Certification is achieved by a 3 weeks on site training at Microsoft (Redland). Not everyone passes the first time, you get up-to 3 attempts.

Currently only 36 SQL2005 MCMs and 18 SQL2008 MCMs, you get 3 weeks training with an elite class and world class SQL Server experts...

The total package is $18,000 US (with $3000 discount at the moment)...

NB You are also expected to have 5 years of hands-on experience.
