arts: National Portrait Gallery Annual Awards

Earlier this month I went to this exhibition with my mother. The quality of the portraits was fantastic, some have an almost photographic quality, razor sharp images and a sense of heightenreality.

THE EXHIBITION

The BP Portrait Award is the most prestigious portrait competition in the world, promoting the very best in contemporary portrait painting. With a first prize of £25,000, the exhibition has proved to be the launch pad for the careers of a number of successful portrait artists.

Our favourites were not always the prize winners, to be honest I probably favoured the exotic, colourful and emotional interesting pictures - eclectic and quixotic tastes but not terribly original.

quixotic |kwikˈsätik|adjective: exceedingly idealistic; unrealistic and impractical a vast and perhapsquixotic project.ORIGIN late 18th cent.: from Don Quixote -ic .

quixotic: many dismissed his missionary work as imprudent an quixotic idealistic,romantic, visionary, Utopian, extravagant, starry-eyed,unrealistic, unworldly; impractical, impracticable, unworkable,impossible.
